I can’t count the number of times I was told to try a body scan to “get rid” of the darker parts, and bring them light. I found it more challenging to connect to this idea so instead I offer a different approach.
In today’s post, we’re going to explore a powerful daily exercise that can help you shift your focus from negativity to positivity, leading to a happier and healthier life.
The idea is simple: before going to bed each night, perform a “self-scan” that highlights all the positive and non-hurting aspects of your body and day.
This practice can transform the way you perceive yourself and the world around you, fostering gratitude and well-being.
Positive Self Scan
- Find a quiet, comfortable space: Set aside a few minutes each night to do your self-scan. Choose a place where you can relax and be undisturbed, like your bedroom or a cozy corner of your home.
- Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths: Begin by calming your mind and focusing on your breath. Inhale deeply, filling your lungs, and then exhale slowly. Repeat this a few times to help you relax and center yourself.
- Start your self-scan: Begin at the top of your head and work your way down your body. As you scan each area, take a moment to appreciate and express gratitude for all the positive aspects and sensations you experience. For example:
- Thank your head for supporting your creative thoughts and problem-solving abilities.
- Appreciate your eyes for allowing you to see the beauty in the world around you.
- Be grateful for your heart, which pumps life-giving blood throughout your body.
- Reflect on the positive events of your day: Once you’ve completed your body scan, think about the good things that happened during your day. It could be a kind gesture from a stranger, a delicious meal, or a moment of laughter shared with a friend. As you recall these positive experiences, allow yourself to savor the warm feelings they evoke.
- Express gratitude: Silently or out loud, express gratitude for all the positive aspects of your body and the good things that happened throughout your day. This simple act of thankfulness can shift your focus from negativity to positivity, helping you cultivate a more optimistic outlook.
- Bring your self-scan to a close: When you’re ready, take a few more deep breaths and then gently open your eyes. Carry the feelings of gratitude and positivity with you as you drift off to sleep.
By performing this daily self-scan, you’ll train your mind to seek out the positive aspects of your life and body. Over time, this practice can lead to increased happiness, better sleep, and an overall sense of well-being. So, give it a try! You might be surprised at the profound impact this simple exercise can have on your life.
Sweet dreams and happy scanning!
